US President-elect Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he has appointed Elon Musk to a position focused on enhancing government efficiency, further increasing the influence of the world’s wealthiest individual who contributed millions to Trump’s campaign.
Musk will join former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy in co-leading a newly established Department of Government Efficiency, which Trump suggested will function independently of traditional government structures.

In a statement, Trump remarked that Musk and Ramaswamy “will help my Administration eliminate government bureaucracy, reduce unnecessary regulations, cut wasteful spending, and reorganize federal agencies.”
He added that this new department will fulfill long-standing Republican aspirations and “offer advice and guidance from outside of government,” indicating that the roles of Musk and Ramaswamy will be informal, not requiring Senate confirmation, and allowing Musk to continue his leadership of Tesla, the social media platform X, and SpaceX.
The new department is set to collaborate with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget to implement unprecedented large-scale structural reforms and foster an entrepreneurial mindset within the government, according to Trump. The initiative is expected to wrap up by July 4, 2026, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Musk, who Forbes ranks as the wealthiest individual globally, stands to gain significantly from Trump’s success, as the billionaire entrepreneur is anticipated to have considerable influence in advancing his companies and securing favorable government policies.
With numerous connections in Washington, Musk contributed millions to support Trump’s presidential campaign and appeared publicly alongside him. Trump has indicated that he would consider offering Musk a position in his administration focused on enhancing government efficiency.
Incorporating a government role for Musk could enhance the market value of his companies and benefit sectors like artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency. “It’s evident that Musk will play a significant role in the Trump administration, given his expanding influence across various federal agencies,” noted equities analyst Daniel Ives from Wedbush Securities in a research report.

“We believe the advantages for Musk and Tesla far exceed any potential downsides, as this represents a strategic ‘poker move for the ages’ by Musk, betting on Trump,” Ives remarked.
Trump compared the efficiency initiative to the Manhattan Project, the U.S. effort to develop the atomic bomb that contributed to the conclusion of World War II, while Musk assured transparency in the process.

“All activities of the Department of Government Efficiency will be made available online to ensure maximum transparency,” Musk stated on X, encouraging the public to share their insights.
“We will also showcase a leaderboard that highlights the most ridiculously wasteful spending of your tax dollars. This will be both tragically revealing and highly entertaining,” Musk added.
Musk stated at a Trump rally in Madison Square Garden in October that the federal budget could be cut by “at least” $2 trillion. According to the Congressional Budget Office, discretionary spending, which includes defense spending, is projected to reach $1.9 trillion out of a total of $6.75 trillion in federal outlays for fiscal 2024.
“Your money is being squandered, and the Department of Government Efficiency is here to tackle that. We’re committed to getting the government off your back and out of your wallet,” Musk stated at the rally. The new department’s acronym, ‘DOGE,’ also nods to the cryptocurrency dogecoin that Musk has been known to promote.
In August, Musk and Tesla successfully had a federal lawsuit dismissed that accused them of defrauding investors by inflating the value of dogecoin and engaging in insider trading, which allegedly led to billions in losses.
Ramaswamy
Ramaswamy, the founder of a pharmaceutical company, ran for the Republican presidential nomination against Trump but later endorsed the former president after exiting the race.
Ramaswamy announced that his appointment means he is stepping back from consideration for the upcoming US Senate position in Ohio, where Governor Mike DeWine will select a successor for JD Vance, who is set to become Trump’s vice president upon their inauguration on January 20.
