The news spread out on social media after his death, and former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away at the age of 92. He was only the first Prime Minister from the Sikh Community, as a prime minister – he led India from 2004 to 2014.
Ex-PM was taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences for emergency medical treatment. The hospital released the information – he suffered from age-related diseases.
The hospital management confirm his death on Thursday night. The current Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi expressed sorrow and wrote the country was mourning Manmohan Singh’s death and called as the “most distinguished leader” on X’s official account.

In his era, he warmed relations with the United States and marked a major Nuclear Deal between the two countries, signed in 2008. On his death – the US Secretary of State offered condolences and described him as:
“One of the greatest champions of the US-India relations”
Who was Manmohan Singh?
Manmohan Singh was born in Gah, which is now in Punjab province in Pakistan. Singh’s family migrated to India in the 1947 partition, his mother left him when he was young – till the age of 10 years, he continued studying in the Urdu language.
After migration from Pakistan, they were settled in Haldwani but later they moved to Amritsar – where he was admitted to Hindu College in Amritsar. Struggling with difficult situations, he attended Punjab University and later he got a bachelor’s & master’s degree in Economics between 1952 and 1954. Passing out from a master’s degree, Singh was nominated in economics as a “reader” at Punjab University from 1959 to 1963.
Singh started their career in politics when he was appointed as the “Advisor” to the Ministry of Foreign of Lalit Narayan Mishra. He didn’t stop developing himself, in 1972 he remained “Chief Economic Advisor” in the Ministry of Finance and
That was his entry into politics, after spending four years as an Advisor – he was appointed as the Secretary in the Ministry of Finance which was his massive success after involving in politics. Gradually, playing different positions in various departments – he was appointed as the governor of Reserve Bank India.
Became a Prime Minister (2004 – 2009 & 2009 – 2014)
His journey as the “Prime Minster” began when the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) declared Manmohan Singh for prime ministership. As he was honest and had no corruption allegations – the majority of people voted for him. On 22nd May 2004 – he was elected as the first “Sikh Prime Minister of India”.
After the end of the first era, the general election was held in 2009 – in this election, the people of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal widely supported him in winning the election. Singh was the first prime minister to reelect as prime minister after Jawaharlal Nehru.
In the member of the house, the congress and joint parties supported him – the congress got the vote support of 322 members out of 543 members. He took oath second-time as prime minister on 22nd May 2009.
Efforts in Education, Finance and Foreign Policy
That was a great era for India to bring the development in the education, and finance departments to control the economy positively and move the country towards the digital world. In the meantime, Singh’s government, India made a Nuclear deal with America to make a nuclear power country with the help of American technology.
To eliminate unemployment and help people through government relief programs, the government took the necessary steps to launch the “National Rural Health Mission” program in 2005. Spreading education in backward areas and give chance to poor students to study at the best institutes in the country like All India Institute of Medical Science, Indian Institute of Management and Indian Institute of Technology.
During his period when he was serving as finance minister, he reduced corruption, licensed Raj and sped up the economy. India is the 2nd largest country in the world with an economy of 9% economic rate in 2007. At that time, the government also reformed the finance and banking sectors.
Illness and Death
He underwent cardiac bypass surgeries which happened in 2009 – in 2020 Singh was admitted to hospital due to unsatisfactory medications in All India Institute of Medical Science. In 2020, he was hospitalized after being positive for a Covid-19 test.
Later on 26th December this year – the whole of India mourned his death with sorrow. The last funeral moment took place at the Singh Funeral place. Leaders across the world expressed sorrowed and praised his efforts and dedication work for India and his role in speeding up the country’s economy.
Latest Updates – The recent news shared via India Today that the government disrespected the funeral of Ex-Pm by performing at the public funeral place. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the government of the insult of the last rites of the former PM.
The General Secretary of Congress Priyanka Gandhi has made a statement on the disrespect and dishonesty of Modi’s government that they have not done justice and respect as it must be for Ex-PM and also the Sikh Community.
